Zodiac Killer Victims: Who He Murdered

The Zodiac Killer remains one of America's most infamous unidentified serial killers. Active primarily in Northern California between late 1968 and 1969, he is officially linked to five murders and two attempted murders. The perpetrator taunted law enforcement and media with cryptic letters and ciphers, claiming up to 37 victims, though investigators have confirmed only seven attacks.

The case, which inspired books, films, and ongoing investigations, centers on four known attacks. Authorities from the Vallejo Police Department, Napa County Sheriff's Office, Solano County, and the FBI continue to list it as open.

Background on the Zodiac Killer

The Zodiac Killer first gained widespread attention in 1969 after sending letters to Bay Area newspapers, including the San Francisco Chronicle. He adopted the name "Zodiac" and included symbols resembling a crossed circle. His communications often featured ciphers, some of which were later solved decades after being sent.

The killer primarily targeted young couples in isolated areas but also struck a lone taxi driver. Weapons included a .22-caliber pistol, a 9mm pistol, and a knife. No further confirmed attacks occurred after October 1969, though letters continued into the mid-1970s.

Confirmed Zodiac Killer Victims and Attacks

Investigators link the Zodiac to seven victims across four incidents. Five died, and two survived.

1. Lake Herman Road Murders (December 20, 1968)

David Arthur Faraday, 17, and Betty Lou Jensen, 16, were the first confirmed victims. The high school students were shot on a gravel turnout along Lake Herman Road in Benicia, Solano County—a popular "lover's lane" spot.

Faraday was shot once in the head at close range. Jensen was shot five times in the back while attempting to flee. Their bodies were discovered outside their vehicle by a passerby. No robbery or sexual assault occurred.

2. Blue Rock Springs Park Shooting (July 4-5, 1969)

Approximately six months later and about four miles from the first scene, the killer attacked again in Vallejo.

Darlene Elizabeth Ferrin, 22, a married waitress and mother, and Michael Renault Mageau, 19, were shot while sitting in Ferrin's car in the parking lot of Blue Rock Springs Park. The assailant approached with a flashlight, then fired a 9mm pistol.

Ferrin was hit multiple times and died en route to or at the hospital. Mageau survived gunshot wounds to the face, neck, and chest. He provided a description of the attacker to police.

Shortly after, the killer called the Vallejo Police Department, claiming responsibility for the shooting and the earlier Lake Herman Road murders.

3. Lake Berryessa Stabbing (September 27, 1969)

The third attack occurred at Lake Berryessa in Napa County. Bryan Calvin Hartnell, 20, and Cecelia Ann Shepard, 22, were picnicking when a hooded man approached them.

The attacker, wearing a black executioner-style hood with a Zodiac symbol, claimed to be an escaped convict and tied them up. He then stabbed both victims repeatedly. Hartnell was stabbed six times in the back and survived. Shepard was stabbed ten times and died two days later in the hospital.

The killer left a message on Hartnell's car door, including dates of previous attacks and the Zodiac symbol, written in marker. He also called the Napa County Sheriff's Office to report the crime.

4. Presidio Heights Murder (October 11, 1969)

The final confirmed killing involved Paul Lee Stine, 29, a taxi driver in San Francisco.

Stine picked up a passenger near Union Square and drove to the Presidio Heights neighborhood. The passenger shot him once in the head with a 9mm pistol. The killer then took Stine's wallet, keys, and a portion of his bloody shirt, which he later mailed to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Eyewitnesses provided details that led to a composite sketch of the suspect. This was the only known attack in San Francisco proper.

Survivors of Zodiac Attacks

Two individuals survived the Zodiac Killer's assaults and offered key eyewitness accounts:

  • Michael Renault Mageau (Blue Rock Springs attack)
  • Bryan Calvin Hartnell (Lake Berryessa attack)

Their descriptions helped create composite sketches, though the killer's appearance varied slightly across accounts.

Status of the Zodiac Killer Case

The Zodiac Killer's crimes have not been solved. The perpetrator's identity remains unknown despite extensive investigations, DNA efforts, and cipher decryptions (including the 340-character cipher solved in 2020).

Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, maintain the case as open. Numerous suspects have been proposed over the decades, such as Arthur Leigh Allen, but none have been definitively linked through conclusive evidence.

The killer's letters stopped after 1974, and no additional murders have been officially attributed to him. Various theories and amateur investigations continue, but official confirmation of the perpetrator's identity has not occurred.
